What is Nous and the social tariff campaign?

Nous is a free new service that helps households get smart and stay vigilant against the rising cost of living. We’re partnering with The Sun to make life simpler and fairer for households entitled to cheaper broadband.

What are social tariffs?

How the campaign works

1

Confirm your household

Securely connect at least one bank account. Then we can automatically identify your broadband provider and if you’re due a social tariff.
2

We deal with your provider

Tell us to handle it for you and we’ll contact your broadband provider. We’re calling for 1000s of households to get the cheaper tariffs they deserve.
3

Count down to cheaper broadband

With Nous on your side, you don’t have to lift a finger. We’ll monitor your broadband provider to make sure your household gets a better deal.

What does Nous do with my data?

We need some information from you in order to confirm you are eligible for a social tariff from your broadband provider. This includes your name, address and email address.

With your consent, we securely connect to your bank to identify your broadband provider and confirm that you receive a government benefit payment.

If you ask us to apply for a social tariff on your behalf, we will also need your date of birth, telephone number and National Insurance number.

Nous won’t share any financial data with your broadband provider except to verify that your household is eligible for a social tariff.  privacy statement.

How does Nous work with my bank?

If you tell your bank to allow it, they'll give Nous access to information about who your broadband provider is and whether you receive payments such as Universal Credit. We do this using a secure technology called Open Banking, which is regulated by the UK Government.

This technology also allows us to monitor whether your broadband provider actually moves you to a cheaper tariff. We are never able to access your money, nor withdraw cash from your account. You are always in control of your data and you can disconnect Nous at any time.

How safe is Nous?

Nous is compliant with the ICO, the UK’s data privacy body, and complies with the UK's data protection standards (GDPR). We never see or store your bank login details, your money can’t ever be moved or transferred, and we protect your data with 256-bit bank-grade encryption (the same level of security as your bank).

What's in it for Nous?

Nous is a smart new service that helps households get smart and stay vigilant. We’re partnering with The Sun for our social tariff campaign to help households get the cheaper broadband tariffs they deserve.

Nous won’t receive any money as part of this campaign - from you, from broadband providers or from The Sun. We are doing this because we want to help households save money and have a positive social impact.

In the background, we are working on a new set of features that automatically manage all your household utilities. When those features are ready in a few months, we plan to offer them for a small monthly fee. However, our cost-of-living forecast and the social tariffs feature will remain free.

What does Nous do with my data?

So that we can request a social tariff from your broadband provider on your behalf, we ask you for your name, email and address, and to connect a bank account to verify your broadband payments and qualifying benefits payments. Depending on your broadband provider’s requirements, we may also ask for your National Insurance number and telephone. All personal data is collected, stored and deleted according to our privacy statement, which we hope you’ll find simple, informative and fair. We won’t ever make money through advertising or selling data.

How does Nous connect with my bank?

Linking your account with Open Banking gives us read-only access to your relevant broadband transactions and qualifying benefits payments. Open Banking is built to give you more control of your banking data – you’re always in charge of access and you can revoke it at any time.

As an approved Open Banking provider we are compliant with the ICO, the UK’s data privacy body. We never see or store your bank login details, your money can’t ever be moved or transferred, and we protect your data with 256-bit bank-grade encryption (the same level of security as your bank).

Nous keeps tabs on all major broadband providers in the UK.

What are social tariffs?

Social tariffs are cheaper broadband rates for anyone who gets UC or similar benefits. Big broadband companies have promised to help those struggling with the cost-of-living, but so far fewer than 2% of eligible households have been helped.

Who qualifies for a Social Tariff?

Depending on your broadband provider, you will be eligible if you already receive Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Job Seekers allowance, Income support, Employment and Support allowance or Housing Benefits.

You can request a social tariff yourself, but with Nous on your side, you don’t need to lift a finger – we automatically identify your provider and confirm if you qualify for a social tariff. And we can even handle moving you on to the cheaper rate.

Which broadband providers offer social tariffs?

Nearly all of them. BT, Sky, Virgin Media, Hyperoptic, Kcom and NOW all offer social tariffs.

If you're not with a provider that offers social tariffs you can still sign up and we'll campaign for your provider to offer one.

What if I currently get broadband in a bundle, can I still get a social tariff?

Currently, it depends on your provider. The fairest providers do offer a discount on broadband as part of bundled packages to those eligible for a social tariff, but some providers don’t.

We think all broadband providers should match their promise, rather than punish some households who are already struggling with the rising cost-of-living.

What if I am currently in contract?

Don't worry, even if you're currently in contract you should be able to
switch to a social tariff with the same provider.

How much could I save with a social tariff?

Ofcom estimates that the average household could save £144 a year from moving to a social tariff, whereas other research has estimated the typical saving at around £234 a year. Let’s have a look at a couple of examples:

Example #1
If you’re in-contract for 36MB broadband with BT at £26.99/month, you could get the same speed for £15/month on BT’s social tariff, saving £143.88/year.

Example #2
If you’re out of contract paying Sky £35.50/month for 36MB broadband, you could get the same speed for £20/month on Sky’s social tariff, saving £184.80/year.
